What is the function of a hydraulic accumulator?

Hydraulic accumulators perform several critical functions in fluid power systems. Primarily, they absorb sudden pressure spikes, protecting directional control valves, hoses, and pumps from bursting. In mobile machinery (such as front loaders or tractors), they act as a reliable suspension and shock absorption system, dampening vibrations transmitted to the machine's frame when driving with a load. Furthermore, accumulators compensate for internal fluid leaks and serve as an emergency power source (energy storage) in the event of main pump pressure failure.

Design and operation of diaphragm accumulators

Diaphragm accumulators are the most popular solution in mobile hydraulics. Their high-strength steel pressure vessel contains a flexible elastomer diaphragm that separates a compressible gas (usually dry nitrogen) from the incompressible hydraulic fluid. An increase in system pressure forces hydraulic oil into the accumulator, compressing the nitrogen. When the system pressure drops, the expanding gas pushes the stored fluid back into the circuit, stabilizing its operating parameters.

How to select the right hydraulic accumulator? Key parameters

Choosing the correct accumulator cannot be left to chance. An incorrectly sized unit or wrong gas pressure will render the component useless. When ordering, pay close attention to:

Nominal Volume (V0): The fluid capacity of the accumulator (e.g., 0.7L, 1.0L).
Maximum Working Pressure: Must strictly exceed the maximum supply pressure of the specific hydraulic circuit.
Gas Pre-charge Pressure (p0): This is the nitrogen pressure when the accumulator is empty of fluid. It must be precisely matched to the system's minimum operating pressure (typically set at around 60-90% of the minimum working pressure).
