How does an orbitrol steering unit work?

The orbitrol (hydrostatic steering valve) is the heart of advanced power steering systems. Its primary function is to accurately meter and direct pressurized oil from the steering pump directly to the steering cylinders. Turning the steering wheel shifts the internal spools, resulting in smooth wheel movement. In the event of a main pump failure, the steering unit acts as a manual emergency rotary pump, allowing the operator to steer the machine to safety (albeit with increased physical effort).

Symptoms of a Failing Steering Unit

Wear and tear on an orbitrol is usually progressive and is most often caused by fluid contamination. The main symptoms indicating that the unit needs replacement include:

Noticeable excessive play in the steering wheel (the machine "wanders" on the road).
High steering effort or binding in the steering mechanism.
The wheels turn on their own while driving straight.
External hydraulic fluid leaks from the steering column seal.

How to correctly select a hydraulic steering unit?
